Artist Statement
In this project, I focused on the cross-border contamination affecting Imperial Beach, a community facing an ongoing sewage crisis caused by the Tijuana River. This topic is deeply important to me, and I knew from the beginning that I wanted to shed light on it, and create a social media carousel. I was born and raised in San Diego and live just minutes from Imperial Beach, so this issue feels personal. When I was little, my family and I spent our weekends at the beach, but because of the constant sewage spills and beach closures, we can’t enjoy it the same way anymore.
This project gave me the opportunity to capture photographs that highlight this environmental emergency while allowing me to research and inform my audience about the crisis. Through this carousel, I wanted to not only raise awareness but also encourage others to understand the urgency behind what Imperial Beach is experiencing.
